UN Launches Rescue Mission in Nagorno-Karabakh as Displacement Soars to 100,000+

The United Nations (UN) has announced that it will be deploying an investigation mission to Nagorno-Karabakh in response to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. The mission, which will be made up of diplomats and observers, is aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the conflict, as well as providing assistance to the refugees who have been displaced by the conflict. The mission comes at a time when the region has seen an exodus of more than 100,000 people who had to leave their homes due to the ongoing violence. This is more than the estimated 100,000 displaced during the war in Bosnia in the 1990s. The UN mission to Nagorno-Karabakh stems from the recent escalation of hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the region. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a decades-long conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite the signing of the 1995 ceasefire agreement, the two sides continue to clash intermittently over the region. The conflict between the two countries has been further exacerbated by the deployment of military equipment in the area, and the influx of foreign fighters. These foreign fighters have come from countries including Syria, Iraq and Turkey, and are believed to be actively supporting one side or another in this conflict. The UN mission will seek to monitor the situation on the ground, carry out an independent inquiry into the conflict, and provide humanitarian assistance to the displaced persons. The mission will also help to create communications channels between the two sides in order to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The announcement has been welcomed by international organizations such as the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, who have said that the mission will be “an important step towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.” The UN mission is an important step towards finding a peaceful resolution to the Armenia and Azerbaijan conflict and ensuring that the rights of the displaced persons are respected. It is hoped that the mission will bring an end the violence in the region and pave the way for a more peaceful future.
