“The Matriarch of Mexico’s Drug Cartel: María Consuelo Loera Passes Away at 94

Maria Consuelo Loera, the Mother of Drug Lord El Chapo, Has Died at Age 94 The world of drug trafficking has suffered yet another tragedy as Maria Consuelo Loera, the mother of the world’s most notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, has passed away at the age of 94. Maria, who had long struggled with ill health, died on Thursday due to complications of pneumonia and gender-related frailty. El Chapo was the leader of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel in Mexico for years before he was arrested and extradited to the United States where he was ultimately convicted of 17 offenses, including drug trafficking and murder. Since then, he has been serving out a life sentence in a high-security federal prison in Colorado. The beloved family matriarch had been a part of the small town of Mataenza in the Mexican state of Sinaloa since she was born in 1925 and later moved to Sinaloa City upon marrying her husband, a migrant worker who passed away when El Chapo was just two-years-old. Maria raised El Chapo and his brothers and sisters by herself, essentially creating a humble upbringing for them all. Maria’s death is not the only tragedy the Loera family has experienced recently. El Chapo’s eldest son, Ivan Guzman Loera, was assassinated last year in the coastal city of Mazatlan where he was living. El Chapo’s brother Ignacio Guzman Loera, also known as “Nacho”, is currently facing extradition to the US where he may face similar charges as his brother El Chapo. Maria’s funeral was held in her hometown of Mataenza this Sunday, attended by hundreds of locals. Maria is remembered as a kind and loving mother who provided a moral foundation for her children despite their later career choices. Though El Chapo is incarcerated for life now, his mother’s legacy will live on in the community she cared for her entire life.
