“White House Allies with Israel: Time to Revamp Strategy During Bombing Pause

The United States government recently urged Israel to change their strategy concerning efforts to stop the violence in the region during a bombing pause. During a meeting with the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony J. Blinken and the US ambassador to Israel, Dan Shapiro, the White House pressed Israel to end its reliance on military force and shift to a more comprehensive approach when it comes to addressing the ongoing regional conflict. The White House reportedly argued that while Israel undoubtedly has the right to self-defense, the use of lethal force can only be justified if it is towards a real, clearly defined military objective. Furthermore, the United States has encouraged Israel to take measures that will address the underlying causes of the conflict, such as addressing economic and social disparities in the region, ending regional occupation, and ensuring comprehensive and enduring stability and security. In addition, during the meeting the US State Department officials discussed other key issues pertaining to the region such as foreign aid, human rights, and religious freedom. The US government’s pressing of Israel to shift from a purely militaristic approach in addressing the conflict is welcomed by many in the region. This shift in policy signals to the world that the United States is now more responsive to the needs of the people in the region. The United States’ newfound approach in trying to address the Mideast conflict is not only welcomed by the international community, it has also been praised by rights groups within the region. While it is unclear whether Israel will heed the United States’ call to switch to a more comprehensive approach in solving the conflict, the United States’ willingness to take a more assertive stance is a positive step towards a lasting resolution in the region.
