“Revolutionizing Everything from TVs to Cancer Imaging: Uncovering the Quantum Dot that Earned a Nobel Prize!

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2019 was awarded to three scientists who made an incredible discovery that changed the way we view modern electronics. Their work on quantum dots has had a profound impact on both life science and display technology. The three scientists awarded the prize were Prof. Akira Yoshino of Meijo University in Japan, Prof. Dr. Herbert Voelcker-Rehage of the JLI institute in Germany, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sir John Pethica of the University of Oxford in the UK. Their research focused on the small semiconductor materials called quantum dots, which are nanocrystals with optical and electrical properties that make them extremely useful in a variety of applications. Quantum dots are not new; they were actually discovered in 1981 by Russian researchers. It was the three Nobel laureates who investigated and developed quantum dots further, creating a new material that could be used to make displays brighter and more efficient. They also developed ways to further study the biophysical properties of quantum dots, which ultimately led to quantum dot-based cancer imaging devices. The impact of quantum dots is widespread and significant. In the field of displays, quantum dots have made LED backlighting much more efficient, allowing for displays that are brighter and more accurate. Quantum dots have also enabled the development of new medical imaging tools, such as those used for cancer diagnosis. The application of quantum dots as a material in electronics has changed the way that manufacturers design and create interfaces for their products. By utilizing the unique properties of quantum dots, engineers can engineer devices that can better interact with the user. It’s fair to say that the science community today owes a great debt of gratitude to the three Nobel laureates. Their research has revolutionized how we use technology, for both entertainment and medicine. All of us at Godzilla Newz would like to extend our highest congratulations to these three pioneering scientists.
