“As Speaker Drama Flares, House GOP Charges Ahead With Impeachment Inquiry

House Republicans have moved forward full steam on the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. Despite the uncertainty that has surrounded the Republican Party ever since former House Speaker Paul Ryan stepped down, the GOP is pushing ahead with the investigation into the President’s conduct. The impeachment inquiry is a two-part process and the first step is the House Judiciary Committee’s investigation into the President’s alleged wrongdoing. The committee, led by Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), is looking into whether the President committed any high crimes or misdemeanors while in office. The committee has requested documents from the White House, the Justice Department, and other government entities, as well as conducted interviews with current and former administration officials, in order to build a case. Meanwhile, the House Intelligence Committee is also conducting its own investigation. This committee is looking into allegations that the President sought to have Ukraine interfere with the upcoming 2020 election, in an effort to boost his own chances at re-election. Recent reports that the President may have used his office to pressure Ukrainian authorities to investigate a political rival has further intensified the calls for impeachment. While the President has denied the allegations, the House committees are investing the matter regardless. The next step in the impeachment process is for the House to issue formal charges against the President. The GOP has said it will be up to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to decide when to take this step, but it is clear that the House will do so before the end of the year. It remains to be seen how the impeachment process will unfold and what the outcome will be. Despite the uncertainty, House Republicans are pushing forward and doing their utmost to hold the President accountable for any alleged wrongdoing he may have committed while in office.
