“Why the World Has Turned Against Israel’s War in Gaza: Many Israelis Baffled

In the last few weeks, the world has been watching with horror as the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip intensifies. While many countries have voiced their support for the Israeli government, a growing consensus among many nations, governments and public figures is that Israel’s actions are excessive and should be stopped. The concern from countries and people around the world began after Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza City in response to a barrage of rockets from Hamas. Since then, the conflict has only escalated, with civilian casualties reaching nearly 1500 and entire neighborhoods in Gaza being destroyed. The international response to this crisis has been both swift and clear. World powers such as the US, UK and Russia have all expressed concern over the suffering of civilians, and most countries have called for an immediate end to the violence. Countries such as Ireland, Kuwait, South Africa and various Latin-American countries have also gone even further, proposing resolutions in the United Nations General Assembly that would condemn the Israeli actions. As the international outcry grows, many Israelis are struggling to understand this largely hostile response, particularly since most of the country seems to be in unified support of the military action in Gaza. The Israeli government has downplayed the impact of the international community, claiming that the country will maintain its policy in Gaza until there is a “durable solution” to the conflict. Despite this, there is no doubt that the strong global backlash against the war is having an impact. Researchers have noted that the Israeli government has recently begun to modify its tone, dialing back the derogatory language and rhetoric used to describe Palestinians. It has also become increasingly clear that a diplomatic solution to the crisis is needed, as there is no end in sight to the ongoing military operations in Gaza. At the end of the day, it is important to remember that innocent civilians on both sides are suffering due to this conflict, and that peace will only be achieved when all parties involved agree to a lasting resolution. In the meantime, the world must continue to put pressure on both sides to show respect for human rights and to pursue meaningful diplomatic efforts. Only then will the devastating situation in Gaza be brought to an end.
