“Six Battlegrounds That Could Trip Biden in 2024: How the President Could Lose the White House

As the 2020 U.S. Presidential election winds down, many Americans are already looking ahead to the 2024 election. Recent polls and studies suggest that the outcome of the next election could be decided in the same six battleground states that decided the outcome of the 2020 election. These six states — Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina — all have significant electoral votes which could sway the election in one direction or another. The state’s demographics also make them more likely to swing to one candidate than the other, and each has been a swing state in the past few elections. Pennsylvania is already viewed as “key to victory” by many Republicans and Democrats because of its 20 electoral votes, which could prove to be the decisive factor in the 2024 election. The state has a higher proportion of African American voters and has been a bellwether state in recent presidential elections, voting for the winner in every election since 1992. The historically Democratic-leaning state’s economic recovery from the pandemic, as well as its changing political climate, could provide unique opportunities for either party. Michigan and Wisconsin, two states that helped to deliver Donald Trump to the White House in 2016, could again be battlegrounds in 2024. Both states flip-flopped from their traditionally Democrat leanings in 2016, to narrowly awarding 20 and 10 electoral votes to Trump. Since then, Wisconsin has seen an increase in voter registration among Democrats in the wake of the 2020 election, and Michigan is the site of one of the most closely watched U.S. Senate races this cycle. Arizona, once a red state, flipped in 2020 and is now a closely contested battleground. It is one of the fastest-growing states in the country, and could play an important role in the future of America’s political landscape. The state has nine electoral college votes and has already started to trend away from its prior conservative leanings with support for legalizing marijuana, releasing a ballot initiative for the 2020 election. Georgia and North Carolina also represent important swing states that are Democrat-leaning, yet still highly competitive and contested. Despite the fact that their populations are overwhelmingly conservative and socially conservative, both states have adopted voter-friendly laws and practices that could make them even more competitive in 2024. The 2020 election has demonstrated how important the six battleground states are in deciding the outcome of a presidential election. President Biden could stand to lose the White House if he does not carry all six of these states in 2024. These states could help decide who the next president of the United States will be, which is why politicians on both sides of the aisle are already putting special emphasis on these battleground states.
