“Speaker Johnson and McConnell: Heading for a Showdown?

In recent news, the political feud between Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, has come to a head. The two have been at odds since Pelosi became speaker last December as McConnell has viewed her as a “road block” to passing his agenda. Much of the tension has been focused on the requested funding for a border wall, the proposed healthcare bill, and the debt ceiling. The divide between the two party leaders has resulted in a gridlock in Congress with both sides refusing to budge on their stances. This eventually led to Pelosi withholding the debt ceiling vote which almost resulted in an economic crisis. Not long after, McConnell and his Republican colleagues put forward a motion to end Pelosi’s speaker position on the grounds that she was not able to compromise or come to an agreement on any of the issues. However, the motion failed to pass due to the lack of support from House Democrats. This has now put Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader McConnell on a collision course. It appears that neither side is willing to back down and the battle for control in Congress looks set to continue. It has to be said, however, that Speaker Pelosi has been largely successful in holding her ground on matters concerning President Trump. The question now is whether McConnell will be able to push his agenda through or if, like Pelosi, he will be unwilling to compromise. The events between Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader McConnell are a perfect example of how much power American politicians wield and also serves as a reminder of how much is at stake when it comes to passing legislation. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the two leaders, but one thing is certain; it is sure to be an interesting struggle.
